His research is currently focused on the role of metabolism, oxidative stress and signaling cascades in normal brain function and in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. He uses a variety of animal and cell models with molecular and imaging techniques to approach these questions. He has a long term commitment to the ASN. He is a recipient of the Jordi Folch-Pi award and has served as a member or chairman of multiple ASN committees. He is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurochemistry, Neurochemical Research and Neurochemistry International. He is also a co-editor of the volume on Neural Energy Utilization for the new Handbook of Neurochemistry and Molecular Biology. JEAN MERRILL has a PhD in Microbiology & Immunology and an MBA in Marketing and Finance, both from UCLA. She started studying Multiple Sclerosis at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden for her postdoctoral work. She returned to UCLA in 1980 where she was a faculty member in the Neurology Department until 1995, continuing to study the neuroimmunology of MS. At that time, Jean left academia for the Biotech/Pharmaceutical industry, working for 3 years at Berlex. Since 1998 she has been the Director of the MS portfolio at Aventis Pharmaceuticals. The Aventis MS portfolio addresses therapeutic intervention from several perspectives, including anti-inflammatories as well as neuroprotective agents and small molecules that drive remyelination. Jean has been associated with and a member of the ASN throughout her career, regularly organizing and presenting at symposia, colloquia, and workshops. She has served as an ASN Council member, Chair of the ASN Fundraising Committee, and has recently been asked to serve on the ASN Presidential Advisory Board. |
