Jordi Folch-Pi Memorial Award for 2005

Dr. Matthew Rasband

Dr. Matthew Rasband is the winner of the 2005 Jordi-Folch-Pi Memorial Award. Dr. Rasband's research is directed toward 1) understanding the celllular and molecular mechanisms that regulate ion channel clustering and localization in neurons, 2) elucidating the role of neuron-glia interactions in myelinated axons especially as they relate to node of Ranvier formation, and 3) understanding how nervous system diseases and injuries influence the clustering of ion channels and neuronal excitability. Dr. Rasband received a B.S. in Physics from Brigham Young University, and a Ph.D. in Biophysics at the University of Rochester under the direction of Dr. Peter Shrager. His postdoctoral training was under the guidance of Dr. James Trimmer at Stony Brook University. Dr. Rasband started his own laboratory in 2002 at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Currently, Dr. Rasband is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine.
