Jordi Folch-Pi Memorial Award for 2009
Dr. Francesca Bosetti

Francesca Bosetti Folch Pi recipient 2009

Dr. Francesca Bosetti was the winner of the 2009 Jordi-Folch-Pi Memorial Award. The main goals of Dr. Bosetti’s research are to elucidate the roles of cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2), their prostanoid products and their downstream receptors, as well as the mechanisms regulating the classical, pro-inflammatory, and the alternative, anti-inflammatory, macrophage/microglial activation pathways in excitotoxicity, neuroinflammation, and neurodegenerative disease. Dr. Bosetti (right) is pictured above receiving her award. She is being presented the award by Folch Pi Award Committe Chair, Dr. Eric Murphy.

Dr. Bosetti's long term goals are to identify novel therapeutic targets, and to develop novel more effective and less toxic treatments for brain diseases with an inflammatory component. Dr. Bosetti received her Pharmacology degree from the University of Pisa, Italy in 1996 and her Ph.D. in Molecular and Experimental Medicine in 2000 from "Sant' Anna School of Advanced Studies", Pisa, Italy. She performed her postdoctoral training with Stanley Rapoport at the National institute on Aging, where she identified the arachidonic acid cascade as a common therapeutic target of mood stabilizers. She joined the National Institute on Aging as a tenure-track investigator in the Brain Physiology and Metabolism Section in 2004, where she is currently the Head of the Molecular Neuroscience Unit.
