Jordi Folch-Pi Memorial Award for 2011
Dr. Eduardo Candelario-Jalil

Dr. Candelario-Jalil received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Havana, Cuba in 2002. He completed his first postdoctoral training in Dr. Bernd Fiebich's lab in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Freiburg, Germany, where he studied signal transduction pathways in neuronal and glial cells with particular emphasis on neuroinflammatory events after cerebral ischemia. His first postdoctoral training was supported by a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He joined the University of New Mexico in 2006 to pursue his second postdoctoral training under the mentorship of Dr. Gary A. Rosenberg where he examined the link between cyclooxygenase-2 activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinases during neuroinflammation and ischemic stroke. These studies were funded by a postdoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association. In October 2008, Dr. Candelario-Jalil became a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of New Mexico. His research studies the neuroinflammatory mechanisms involved in damage to the blood-brain barrier following cerebral ischemia with particular emphasis on cyclooxygenases and prostanoid signaling. Dr. Candelario-Jalil is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Neuroinflammation.
