Marian Kies Memorial Award for 1995
Dr. Shun-Fen Tzeng

Dr. Shun-Fen Tzeng

Dr. Shun-Fen Tzeng was the recipient of the 1995 Marian Kies Award. The main focus of her dissertation research was to investigate the response of Schwann cells and oligodendroglia to myelin basic protein/myelin basic protein peptides, and her study provided evidence to explain the distinct proliferative ability of the two glial cells during demyelination. Currently, Dr. Tzeng’s research is aimed at 1) understanding how cAMP and calcium signaling pathways regulate the function of astrocytes and microglia, and 2) elucidating the role of neuron-glia interaction in the CNS repair. Dr. Tzeng received a B.A. in Chemistry from the National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, and obtained a M.S. in Biochemistry from the National Taiwan University School of Medicine, Taiwan. She completed her Ph.D. study in Biochemistry at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, under the guidance of her advisor Dr. George H. DeVries. Her postdoctoral training was with Dr. Jean de Vellis at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Tzeng is currently a Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at the National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan ROC. Dr. Tzeng is pictured with Drs. George DeVries and. Jean de Vellis.
